CORE vaccines for puppies

These are considered essential regardless of lifestyle:

  • Distemper (CDV)
  • Adenovirus (Hepatitis)
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza (often combined)
  • Rabies (required by Texas law)

These are typically given in a series every 2–4 weeks from ~6–16 weeks of age

Texas law requires that all dogs and cats receive a rabies vaccination by four months of age, as outlined in Texas Administrative Code Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 169, Rule 169.29. After the initial vaccination, dogs must receive booster shots at intervals based on the type of vaccine administered.

NON-CORE vaccines are based on environment and lifestyle riskRecommended depending on exposure, location, or activities:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Canine influenza
  • Rattlesnake vaccine (region-specific, Texas relevant in some areas)

CORE vaccines for kittens

  • Feline Panleukopenia (FPV – “distemper”)
  • Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1)
  • Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
→ (These 3 are combined as FVRCP)
  • Rabies (required by Texas law)
  • Feline Leukemia (FeLV) (core for kittens under 1 year)

Core vaccines are recommended for all kittens due to high susceptibility

Texas law requires that all dogs and cats receive a rabies vaccination by four months of age, as outlined in Texas Administrative Code Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 169, Rule 169.29. After the initial vaccination, dogs must receive booster shots at intervals based on the type of vaccine administered.

NON-CORE

  • FeLV (for low-risk adult cats later becomes non-core)
  • Chlamydia felis
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica

These depend on:

  • Multi-cat households
  • Exposure risk

  • Core vaccines = essential for all pets
  • Non-core vaccines = lifestyle-based
  • Rabies = legally required in Texas

Vaccines are not just for your pets safety and well-being. Many people interact with animals in their daily lives, both at home and away from home.

Zoonotic illnesses are a reminder that one of the best ways we can help human health is to improve our understanding and management of animal health. Meaning it can spread from animals to people, with the vast majority originating in wildlife.

  • Every 2–4 weeks until ~16 weeks
  • Rabies: ~12–16 weeks
